Next month, Three Nines Children’s Charity will begin rolling out its groundbreaking Calm & Care Pack pilot, marking an important milestone in the development of its pioneering Emotional First Aid initiative.
Developed in partnership with Learning Resources UK and BMT Consultancy, the pilot will explore how practical, trauma-informed resources can provide immediate comfort, reassurance and emotional support to children and young people following incidents attended by the emergency services.
The Calm & Care Packs have been carefully designed to help children feel safe, supported and understood during difficult and often distressing moments. Each kit contains a range of age-appropriate resources that encourage communication, provide comfort and support emotional wellbeing. Every kit also includes QR codes on both the bag and within the pack, enabling children and families to connect directly with Three Nines Children’s Charity and access ongoing support beyond the initial emergency response.
This creates an ongoing pathway to support, ensuring families know where they can turn once the immediate crisis has passed.
The pilot forms part of Three Nines’ wider Emotional First Aid initiative, which aims to improve outcomes for children and young people affected by trauma by providing support at the earliest possible opportunity.
First Pilot Rollout
Next month, the first phase of the pilot will see hundreds of Calm & Care Packs distributed across a diverse range of emergency service organisations in North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Essex.
Together, these organisations will help explore how Calm & Care Packs can provide immediate emotional reassurance to children following emergency incidents while creating a direct pathway for families to access ongoing trauma-informed support through Three Nines Children’s Charity.
Anne Campbell Gunn, Founder and CEO of Three Nines Children’s Charity, said:
“We know that for many children, the emotional impact of a traumatic incident can continue long after the emergency response has ended. Through the Calm & Care Pack pilot, we are exploring new ways to ensure children receive comfort, reassurance and support during those critical early moments.
We’re incredibly grateful to our emergency service partners for embracing this pilot and recognising the importance of supporting children’s emotional wellbeing alongside their immediate physical safety. We also thank Learning Resources UK and BMT Consultancy for their partnership and shared commitment to improving outcomes for children and families. Together, we’re helping create pathways of support that continue long after the blue lights fade.”
Throughout the pilot, Three Nines will work closely with participating emergency service organisations to gather feedback, evaluate the initiative and explore opportunities for wider rollout across the UK. The learning from the pilot will help shape the future development of the charity’s Emotional First Aid programme and strengthen support for children and families affected by trauma.
