A Holiday That Changed Everything: Reiley’s Story

When a child experiences something no child ever should, healing can feel impossible. For Reiley, life changed forever after the devastating murder of his mum. The year that followed was filled with grief and isolation. His dad did everything he could to stay strong for his son, but together they struggled to find even small moments of happiness in everyday life.

When Reiley’s dad first reached out to Three Nines, he shared that a short break might help – a chance to step away from the painful reminders at home and create new happy memories together. But, like so many families referred to us, arranging a holiday on their own was simply not possible.

Through our partnership with The Principle Trust Children’s Charity, Reiley and his dad were able to enjoy their very first holiday together. What started as a week away soon became so much more than a break – it became a turning point, a chance to breathe, laugh, and begin to heal.

A Father’s Words

Reflecting on the holiday, Reiley’s dad shared:

“We honestly didn’t feel it was possible to find real enjoyment in our daily routine after everything, but this holiday showed us that happiness and quality family time are still possible. That smile on Reiley’s face was amazing for me to see and a huge change from how we have all been feeling. I was able to have my first ever holiday with my son, and that is something I will treasure forever.”

Why This Matters

For families living with trauma, a holiday is far more than just a change of scenery. It’s a chance to reconnect, recharge, and create new happy memories. Reiley’s story shows just how vital it is for children and families to have safe spaces where they can start healing together.

“At Three Nines, we know that families affected by crime need more than just practical support – they need space to heal, to reconnect, and to find hope again,” says Anne Campbell Gunn, CEO of Three Nines. “Seeing Reiley and his dad enjoy their first holiday together reminds us why our work is so important and the difference even a short break can make.”

The Power of Partnership

This special holiday was made possible because of our collaboration with The Principle Trust. By combining respite breaks with our support services, we are giving families in crisis the chance to recover, rebuild, and rediscover joy. Together, we are creating brighter tomorrows for children and families impacted by crime.
